3376: The Burning North

3376 is the working title of a novel series based on the Medieval America series on my Youtube channel. This is not an alternate history series, but a far future world, where technology has regressed and many of the same demographic distributions of modern America have remained intact. The first novel is called the Burning North and focuses on Oronhyatekha von Kronburg, the son and heir of an Ohioan Duke and his attempt to regain control of his duchy, while tearing it away from the influence of the powerful Elector of Irielen, reasserting his family’s ancestral claim to the Electorate of Ohaijen. However the west calls to him, as he believes that the Ohioan Empire’s squabbling nobles will have no reason to sow discord within Imperial borders if they have a common goal. Such as venturing into the mysterious lands beyond the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Or reconquering the Capitol States across the Appalachian mountains.

Concept Art

I am not an artist, but I make visual aids for myself when writing and cover examples for the artists I hire. Most of these are photos or other pieces of art whose poses I’ve traced over before changing the limbs, expressions, clothing, faces, etc.

Oronhyatekha Concept Art

Concept art for Oronhyatekha. His name means “The Burning Sky”, hence the subtitle of the novel. His family, the House of Kronburg, has a crow as its symbolic animal for its cunning. Kronburg is located around modern day Akron, Ohio although their family used to be based out of Cleveland before it became a Free City under the Emperor.

Map of North Mississippia or the Ohioan Empire

Since the Ohioan Empire is so heavily based on the Holy Roman Empire, it was necessary for me to spend 6 hours carving up the Great Lakes into a myriad of Princedoms, Counties, Duchies, Electorates, and Free Cities.

Imperial Dames Concept Art

Concept art for the Imperial Dames, a religious order of armored nuns who were founded in the wake of a siege that was won by a group of nuns after all the men had either died or been injured. They play a more performative role than their initial impression would imply, as Ohioan society is very insistent on the division of power and labor between men and women. That said, many of these women are still formidable combatants, but they understand that their impact on morale is much greater than their impact on the battlefield.

Ninkarate Collage

A collage representing the Ninkarate, the Great Plains’ eastern-most steppe confederation under their leader, the Ninkar, whose only known name is Conotocarius, which means “Devourer of Villages”. The current Ninkar is said to have magical powers thanks to having enslaved two shamans from the mountain tribes out west, who told him the secrets of the last age. But the only tangible difference in power between Conotocarius and anyone else is the fact that he alone owns one of the last working modern firearms on the continent.

Hornblowers Concept Art

The Hornblowers are Mormon warriors from the collection of states north of the Colorado river. Their primary weapons are large metal grappling hooks that are also used to traverse the rocky terrain as the states under Sayhoun seek the destruction of the Catholic states to their south, such that they might spread their religion and take over the lucrative trade networks through the Mojave desert.

Blood Alliance of Saint Peter Concept Art

The Blood Alliance of Saint Peter is a league of city-states along the Rio Grande and in the Mojave desert that all share a religion. They are known for their large, desert fortresses. The people of the League are descendants from a splinter cell of the Sinaloa Cartel—then the Kingdom of Sinaloa — that took over the southwestern United States around 2800AD called the Sinaloa Blood Alliance. The civilization moved in a more theocratic direction upon contact with the Californian Republic and the Mormon states.
