Angels of Fortune

Leonhard von Waiblingen, the last remaining son of the House of Waiblingen, which once ruled over the entire Empire of Neuthelor, has lived his entire life on the run. He and his sisters being the illicit product of an affair between a princess of the current Imperial family and the much diminished Count Liudolf von Waiblingen, their very existence is a threat to the House of Falkeburg. While his sisters Katherine and Eva might be content to live simple lives of middling rank in the city of Heidelberg, an impetus gnaws at Leonhard’s insides. He dreams at night of revenging his mother and father, slaughtered by the Emperor Karl V. He sees the world descending into chaos around him as the rebellion in a faraway country spills into the rest of the Empire and feels ill-at-ease sitting by and watching it happen. But he’s just a young man, with hardly a Groschen to his name. That is until the war comes to him and he stumbles upon an ethereal young woman who claims to be capable of offering him power. Leonhard takes the deal and finds himself with the Key of Ishtar, an ancient burden that allows him to achieve all his ambitions. But he doesn’t yet know the cost of signing this contract. Nor the price in human life and broken trust he will have to pay to restore his family name.

Concept Art

I am not an artist, but I make visual aids for myself when writing and cover examples for the artists I hire. Most of these are photos or other pieces of art whose poses I’ve traced over before changing the limbs, expressions, clothing, faces, etc.

Cover Concept

A cover proof for Angels of Fortune. The subtitle will likely change or disappear. Leonhard pursues his goals as the masked man known only as the Prince so his enemies will never know for sure if he is the bastard child they tried to kill years ago.

Leonhard von Waiblingen Concept Art

Leonhard von Waiblingen in his everyday clothing as a student at Heidelberg University and in his Prince costume. The Key of Ishtar manifests itself as an alchemical symbol of the (fictional) planet of Ashtara, as seen on Leonhard’s hand and on his coat of arms. The version in this piece is directly taken from the Wittelsbach Palatinate arms, but I later found a way to integrate the old Hohenstaufen coat of arms. Additionally, the Waiblingen dynasty was an alternative name for the Hohenstaufen Emperors and is where the Italian name for the Ghibelline faction comes from.

Argo Concept Art

Concept art for Argo “Quicksilver” Silvia, one of the many bastard sons of the Marraran mercenary Muzio deMontefeltro. He is based lightly on Frederico deMontefeltro, one of the first Condottieri of Italy. Argo finds himself in the service of the Prince after being freed from captivity by the enigmatic general.

Johan Andreas Concept Art

Concept art for Johann Andreas Vitin and his wife Sibylle. He is the usurped Elector of Sorbenmark, having lost his throne to a conspiracy led by his half-brother Johann Ernst. He is a fanatical Archonite and finds himself in command of the Prince’s cavalry forces. He is heavily based on John Frederick I of Saxony, who participated in the Schmalkaldic war against Charles V.

Elspeth Concept Art

Elspeth is the descendant of Gotz von Berlichingen, better known at Gotz of the Iron Hand. In a cruel twist of fate, Elspeth herself has lost her hand and replaced it with a similar prosthetic, although hers contains a barrel for firing grapeshot. She was disowned by her family for running off with her lover, who was a gunsmith of middling rank. Her mother sent a mercenary to kill Elspeth and her husband. Elspeth’s hand was taken as proof. However Elspeth was recused and inducted into a circle of witches near the city of Heilbrunna, who taught her magic that allowed her to continue her dead husband’s craft. She finds herself in command of the Prince’s artillery after the war spills into Heilbrunna.

Rabia Concept Art

Rabia Sakir is the daughter of a margrave of the Karasig Empire. Her family’s territory of Bosna was right on the Magyaran front with Empire of Neuthelor. After the Falkeburgs decimated her father’s forces in battle, she was forced to flee across enemy lines rather than back to her homeland and joined up with a group of Archonites fighting in the Bojemician revolt. With no way home, she finds solace in the Prince’s certainty, even if she cares not for Archonites or Avorosians. I’m also now realizing as I’m writing this that the shot of a clock tower I used as a background has a very obvious air conditioner in it…
