Iskandar’s Game and the Cathar’s Crusade

Europe stands on the brink of collapse. The continent is consumed by the fires of a secret war between Magicians and a Gnostic insurgency headed by esoteric mystics with powers beyond what the greatest masters of the arcane can even imagine. As countries fall one by one to their despotic rule, it is usually Marion Gutenberg’s policy to stay out of such matters. Besides, what can one person do against an army of Gnostics? Her thinking soon turns when her past comes knocking. The leader of the insurgents is not some stranger with newfound powers. It’s Marion’s father. Under the influence of a dark force from her childhood, the simple people of Marion’s hometown have become warmongering Cathar zealots who view the Megawgs as gods. Recalling her encounter with that great evil a year and a half ago, the Companions are the only ones capable of stopping them before they can unearth a terrible weapon from the ashes of the last Magician War. But while the Companions fight, the question remains. Will Marion have the strength to defeat this evil, even if it means causing her own family pain, or will she break under the pressure?

Concept Art

I am not an artist, but I make visual aids for myself when writing and cover examples for the artists I hire. Most of these are photos or other pieces of art whose poses I’ve traced over before changing the limbs, expressions, clothing, faces, etc.

Cover Concept

Stitched together some images and drew over them (preferable to AI generation imo) to assemble a proof for what the cover could look like. Leaning in more of a Mission Impossible direction.

Marion Concept Art

Marion is the focal character of this novel, so I created some concept art for a winter outfit.

Altertane Cover Concept

An older version of the cover proof, but I figured I could make use of the space better.

Stained Glass Companions

The four original Companions drawn in a stained-glass-ish style. I’m going really heavy into the church aesthetics, so I wondered how it would look.

Natalia Cover Concept

A slightly darker cover proof featuring the novel’s antagonist, Perfect Natalia (That is actually what the Cathars called their priests) and was made primarily with an eraser.

The Palatine Order of Cologne Seal

The seal used by the Palatine Order of Cologne, who lords over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as shown in the Swiss cross, Teutonic cross, and Habsburg lion surrounding the Imperial Eagle. They claim descent from Charlemagne’s Paladins and are heavily associated with High Medieval Christian mysticism. The words around the border of the gothic window pattern are a German prayer, although I honestly forgot which one.
