What if the chosen ones had already failed? What if the “last chance” to save the world was already a half-cobbled, hail Mary attempt at a venture that had already ended in one defeat? The world of Akkanor is under siege for the second time in its history. It is represented by the Warriors, Mages chosen to be the physical incarnations of the world’s magic. The new generation of Warriors must rise to the occasion for the sake of their world. But something’s not quite right. In the outskirts of the Empire of Akkanor, a small settlement full of powerful mages proves to be hosting four of the nine Warriors. A highly unusual concentration. Not to mention the inclusion of a man who had been declared dead years ago, a man who looks suspiciously similar to the dead Emperor, and a woman on the wrong side of the continent. And none of them seem to remember having lived anywhere else. Jadel Nam-Kalidan, the most gifted and studious among the residents of the humble, but strange settlement, finds himself faced with an equally unusual pair sent to seek them out. An old man who knows more than he lets on and a young woman who seems to be looking for him specifically. Given their mission, the Warriors find themselves faced with impossible odds. Their world is torn apart by infighting while the enemy marches against them, united. Some of their numbers are not who they say they are. Their magic turns against them. And as more and more coincidences line up, the threads of a half-millennia old conspiracy start to unravel, unable to hide the failure of the Warriors who came before them long ago. Jadel’s loyalties to his friends, his world, and even himself are questioned as what was supposed to be a crusade against an evil empire becomes a desperate fight for survival and simple truth. A gambit to win where no one has before. Jadel’s quest will not be a coming of age nor a grand adventure. It will be a desperate struggle to maintain his grip on reality.

Concept Art
I am not an artist, but I make visual aids for myself when writing and cover examples for the artists I hire. Most of these are photos or other pieces of art whose poses I’ve traced over before changing the limbs, expressions, clothing, faces, etc. Also this novel in particular was written as a way to spite Magic the Gathering’s story and their complete refusal to use the dramatic potential they leave on the table. So a lot of the concept art uses MTG art. Don’t cease and desist me, WotC, I wrote a whole novel for this.
Map of Akkanor

The world of Akkanor is incredibly small compared to most planets. This is because Akkanor isn’t a planet, but one piece of thousands that used to belong to the same gigantic planet. The world’s borders are demarcated by an extra-dimension wall around the edges of this map called Schisms. While Akkanor is meant to be united under one imperial banner, such that they can stand united against their otherworldly enemies, the recent decades have seen the human-minority regions secede from the Empire and spark a civil war, led by the Kothani.
Jadel Concept Art

Concept art for the main character. Jadel is a very obvious parallel to Jace Beleren of Magic the Gathering fame. Fun fact, Jace, for like 5 years, had this story line where he wiped his own memory (being a telepath) of his homeworld and it is literally never brought up again until he suddenly receives his memories back after another unrelated amnesia escapade. Nor does he appear to suffer any consequences from it. This was the straw that made me write this novel. Jadel will pay the price for running away.
Vellesa Concept Art

Vellesa Nam-Shawnra is supposed to be the Warrior representing the Conjuration Meridian of Akkanor. But her abilities with the magic are incredibly unskilled for someone her age. On the other hand, she’s an expert necromancer. And yet Akkanor hasn’t been known to have a necromantic Meridian. Nonetheless, magic is fluid and not an exact science. So perhaps her necromancy is just a mutation of conjuring magic. Or perhaps she draws her magic from a different source. A source not of Akkanori origin.
Kusanell Concept Art

Kusanell al-Jari looks like the average young Akkanori man. And yet he bears a striking resemblance to the crown prince of Akkanor, who went missing years back. Kusanell is a power mage not because he is exceptionally skilled with magic, but because he knows how to creatively apply his limited tools. By all account, Kusanell is a second Escalite, while most Warriors have power beyond Archmages, who must pass ten escalations to earn their rank. But even with simple shield magic and hieromancy, Kusanell is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Khena Concept Art

Khena al-Nalri doesn’t look like she belongs in Eastern Akkanor. In fact, she looks Harashiri, a country on the other side of the world. Nonetheless, she is a Warrior. But not a Warrior of pyromancy, the magic she’s trianed with all her life. All pyromancer on all worlds source their magic from the same entity. As such, pyromancers cannot be cosmically declared for one side or another in a clash between worlds. Khena is the Warrior of a Meridian she has hardly trained with, that being the Combat Meridian.
Gaddak Concept Art

Gaddak al-Woursba is the Beast Warrior in spite of the fact he didn’t even know he was a mage until his hometown was burned to the ground. That’s because no one teaches Beast magic except those lucky enough to survive its mind-melting effects. Burdened by a magic that threatens to erase his humanity, Gadd has to find a way to learn to fulfill the task he’s been given while learning magic for the first time in his life. In spite of the efforts of the last generation of Warriors, the new generation is at even more of a disadvantage than they were the first time around.
